The Spice Island of Ceylon

The exotic spice trade was part of the fabric of Ceylon for centuries, even before the Portuguese traders and European conquistadors arrived. The great Arabian traveler Ibn-Batuta traded in aromatic Ceylon cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg, and the reputation of Ceylon spices echo from beyond the time of the great King Solomon of Israel, who according to the bible, sent trade ships to Tharshish (Sri Lanka) in search of “True Cinnamon”. Today, Sri Lanka is a leading exporter of Ceylon Cinnamon, Ceylon Pepper, Ceylon Cloves, Ceylon Cardamom and the famed Ceylon Tea, all branded under the geographical indication of Ceylon Spices due to their unique aroma and flavour.
